British Values

At Petteril Bank School we promote a broad and balanced curriculum which prepares our pupils to become citizens of the future.  We aspire to develop our pupils to live in a multi-cultural, multi-faith and every changing society in Great Britain today.

The five key British values are - democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.   At Petteril Bank these values are taught across the curriculum, through Jigsaw PSHE, Discovery RE, Kidsafe, Assemblies and the day-to-day life of the school.

Democracy

Pupils have different opportunities to have their voices heard.   Our school council meets on a regular basis to share thoughts and ideas.  School council members are voted for by their class.

All pupils are part of a House Team and House captains are voted for at the start of the year, with pupils encouraged to write a short speech to encourage other pupils to vote for them.

An annual questionnaire for pupils enables ideas and views about the school to be shared.

Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they be class rules, school rules or rules that govern the country, are reinforced through school assemblies and throughout our school ethos.  We expect pupils to respect all rules and understand that rules protect us, our pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, and the consequences when laws are broken.  We encourage visits from the police to support our pupils in this area.

Individual Liberty

At Petteril Bank School we educate and provide safe boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education.  Through for example online safety and PSHE lessons we encourage our pupils to understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms.  Our pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.

Mutual Respect

At Petteril Bank our pupils learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others.  All members of the school community are expected to treat each other with respect.  We encourage all pupils to take pride in themselves, their work, their school and local community.

Tolerance

At Petteril Bank School we place emphasis on promoting and celebrating difference and diversity. Through R.E pupils develop knowledge and understanding of other faiths which helps promote tolerance.

We hope our pupils will leave our school with the skills which will enable them to contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

Our school rules READY, RESPECTFUL and SAFE underpin our whole school ethos.
